The FWU is Germany's leading producer of audiovisual and didactic, interactive media for schools and other educational organisations.

FWU produces both analogue and digital videos, educational software on CD-ROMs as well as internet applications. FWU is the first producer of educational DVD-Videos in Germany, making didactic use of new picture, audio and scene selection features which are part of the DVD standard.

FWU keeps on stock approximately 2.000 titles for almost all school subjects and cross-area education, as well as fictional movies for children and the youth. All productions are accompanied by comprehensive handbooks for teachers and educators. Every year 130 new titles are produced.

Decisive for the use of media is the type of teaching method. FWU offers a broad range of products, stressing either the teacher-oriented presentation of media or the pupil-oriented problem solving by means of interactive software. All productions are delivered with comprehensive additional information and suggestions for class-room activities.

The mission of FWU is to produce media that help teachers and pupils to reach teaching and learning objectives by effective and modern means. Last, but not least, our media provide added motivation for learning.

It is a major objective for FWU to provide independent information and consultancy on all pedagogic and technical questions regarding educational media, both on linear and interactive media concepts and the use of telecommunication. FWU is engaged in pilot projects on media-pedagogic issues. Current emphasis lies on digitisation and modularization of AV-media archives for media banks and electronic distribution. FWU was chosen in 1999 to co-ordinate different educational servers and establish a common internet portal for resource locators and school information. This includes integrated catalogues of any type of resources, on-line and off-line. FWU is co-ordinator of several national projects and programmes and a service centre for public and private institutions. The Conference of all Ministers of Education in Germany has named FWU to serve as a contact to OECD with regards to educational media, and the European Schoolnet EUN (Schulweb) in Brussels.

FWU co-operates in a close partnership with communal and state-owned media centres that all adhere to the same principles:

• to provide high-quality media
• to give advise to teachers and pupils
• to develop and test pedagogical concepts for the class-room practice of media.
