The Cologne City Library was founded in 1890 as a public library, endowed by citizens of Cologne, and is today one of the leading German municipal library systems with:
The Internet has transformed the media market. The German Constitution assures all citizens free access to all information, a pledge of increasing significance at a time when information is becoming vast and measureless, and web-based quality information sources often have to be paid for.
The Cologne City Library fulfills this pledge by offering services far exceeding such traditional library tasks as the selection, cataloguing, shelving and loaning of media resources.
The library of today is an information centre also offering training and advice. It furnishes the required technology and offers assistance in its use. It offers such services as filling research orders and procuring documents. Not least in the city of Cologne, the library has an important function as organizer of cultural events and locus of communication.

Media resources - SoundPool |

As the
public's general port of call for questions of all kinds, the library
offers information on vocations, business, school, university study,
leisure time.
The media resources of the entire library system comprise well over
a million items in all generally available media-forms, printed
and digital.
The SoundPool assembles all media dealing with
music on one floor. The focus is on the large stock of CDs and DVDs
from all musical genres - especially classical music, jazz, world
music, rock and pop music and electronic beats. There is also a
large collection of sheet music, scores, and songbooks. All media
can be borrowed and researched online in the library catalogue www.stbib-koeln.de/katalog. "Ihr gewohnter Internetkatalog" offers an English version.
However, CDs and DVDs are available via inter-library loan only
in special exceptional cases.
A special area is dedicated for the use of media on site. The library
users can listen to any CD they like. For making music themselves
there is an electronic piano as well as a grand piano in a separate
training room.

Internet and training |

The internet
complements the research for information in the library and can
be used free of charge. In various trainings experienced librarians
show how to do internet research effectively, followed by hands-on
exercises. Participants also receive an extensive script.

reasons: In the Digital Libary research is easily done remotely
via the internet. A large number of selected databases and high
quality information resources can be searched through a single interface.
This is the way to information that Google does not provide and
which sometimes is even specially licenced for library clients.
