The Museumsstiftung Post und Telekommunikation was established in 1995 during the reform of the German Postal system. The purpose of the foundation is to collect, cover and display the entire development of information transmission in the domains of Post and Telecommunications. To fulfil this public contract the foundation runs a "Museum of Communications" in each of the cities of Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Nuremberg as well as the Philately Archive in Bonn. A film and video archive is also part of the foundation's extensive collections.

At the beginning of the 21st Century information and communication become more and more diverse. New technologies provide ever new possibilities in the transmission of information: Pictures can be sent via mobile phones in just a few seconds, e-mails can carry information across borders and video conferences can enable communication world wide. Looking back on the cultural history of communications also means looking back on the communication media of the past. How did the early switchboards work? Do you know Hertz? What happened at Radio Norddeich? The exhibitions of the affiliated museums of the Museumsstiftung Post und Telekommunikation provide the answers to these and other questions through the films from their film collection.

The Museum of Communications in Berlin combines the past and the future under one roof: it makes the development of the information society vivid and understandable. Three unique robots communicate with the visitors in the museum's atrium. Interactive stations and a computer gallery introduce the central questions of the history of communications. In a treasure chamber the museum displays precious exhibits, above all the Blue Mauritius stamp. The library holds a vast number of books, magazines, records and audio visual as well as electronic media for the user.

The Museum of Communications in Frankfurt highlights communications artistically: In the multi-award-winning museum building on Schaumainkai visitors gain an insight into the history of communications from the beginnings of information transfer up to the modern communications society. The communications exhibition and the many exhibits in the children's workshop are the highlights of the museum. Nine internet terminals in the exhibition area "Internet and transmission technology" are at the visitor's disposal. Specially installed portals offer easy entry into the flow of data on the World Wide Web, and web scouts answer all questions regarding the web at prearranged times.

The history of communications throughout the Seven Seas can be experienced in the Museum of Communications in Hamburg. Topics such as postal service in the mud flats, ship's post, shipping radio service and transatlantic sea cable connections are the special features of the museum. These topics are also presented through various films which are integrated into the film collection of the Museum Foundation, one example being the famous radio station, Radio Norddeich. More Hamburg specials are the tram post, the coffee-sample post box and the reconstruction of the picture-sound-record of the Voyager's space capsule.

The Philately Archive keeps a record of the history of philately from the first stamps to the latest special issue stamp. Apart from rarities and freshly printed new editions the collection consists of original drafts, proofs and trial prints, stamped paper, delivered letters, plates and postmarks. The best known exhibit is the Blue Mauritius.
The so called "General Collection" marks the core of the archive, which today contains more than 800 albums. The aim of the general collection is to show at least one example of every stamp ever published world wide. To achieve this, the archive even nowadays obtains most of the new issues from other countries from the Universal Postal Union in Bern, Switzerland. More than 300 films, stored in the Museum Foundation show the exciting history and world of philately.

The film collection of the Museum Foundation consists of approximately 1,200 different titles and about 2,300 films altogether (16mm, 32mm, 35mm) and videos (VHS, Betacam, various Umatic formats). These are indexed by rental and copy numbers, length and year. In addition to this there is an extensive stock of slides for advertising purposes, which have been commissioned by the Post (app. 3,500 slides).
These are mostly colour films, commissioned by the Ministry for Post and Telecommunications in the 1970's and 1980's. About a 100 of these films were made only for internal use at Post Offices for education and training purposes. There are films about safety at work, professional education and various job descriptions, about information technology and general films about postal services. In addition to the "Post films" from the 1970's and 1980's there are videos with advertisements for post and telecommunications, recordings of television programmes about Btx or cable tv, recordings of anniversary events and series about the history of communication such as "Hauptsache, wir verstehen uns" (As long as we understand each other) or "Kleine Meisterwerke" (Small Masterpieces), which is about the production of stamps. Five titles, available as 16mm copies or VHS, were made in the 1930's.

The film office of the German Reichspost was located in a villa with an estate for outdoor shooting in Berlin-Dahlem. It had a projection room with the possibility for dubbing, a film theatre, a room for sound mastering and editing as well as an animation studio. The film office was an independent office of the German Reichspost providing relative "artistic freedom". After a bomb attack in June 1944 the equipment and materials were taken into the land of the Sudeten Germans where eventually all the films were destroyed before the end of the war.
In 1948 all the films that still existed in the regional post offices were gathered together. The first black and white film from 1949 was followed by the advertisement and information film "Der Reisebegleiter" ("The Travel Guide") in 1950. The "Department of Film, Photographs and Exhibitions" was founded at the end of 1951, it had previously been integrated into the Department of Special Tasks. In the following years the German Federal Post commissioned many films, for example the 1956 colour information film "Briefmarken unter sich" (Stamps by themselves).
Through their rental service the Post made their films available to schools, institutions and organisations free of charge. These films, as long as they were rated and no more than 12 minutes long were also shown in public cinemas. 100 35mm copies of the colour film "Elektronen verteilen Briefe" ("Electrons deliver letters), for example, ran as a supporting film before "Das Mädchen Irma la Douce" ("Irma la Douce").

The collection "Bestand des Filmarchivs" ("Inventory of the Film Archive") presents the diversity of the topics documented in films by the Post and Telekom: the films on the internet are sorted into three categories. The "Dates" divides the films into the decades of their production and also offers a category for undated films. Under "Document Types" the user can choose between 17 different documents ranging from types such as archive or exhibition films to commercial clips and animations. The "Topic" area provides an overview of the contents of the films such as "Work safety" or "TV commercials". Users looking for certain films can do their online research with the help of these three areas or they can use the search function.
