Media Studies in Marburg are defined as a historic-hermeneutic discipline in a historico-cultural and scientific context. As part of the modern humanities they react to the cultural changes and incorporate the development of modern, technical and industrialized mass media.
Audiovisual media, film and television, as well as the new digital media form the core of Media Studies in Marburg. They investigate into theory, aesthetics and history of the audiovisual media, especially their cultural and symbolic forms, additionally they deal with their modes of representation, production and reception. Media Studies examine the social implications of media, the specifics of medial aesthetic structures as well as the modes of operation and the usages of these media objects. It localises modern audiovisual media in an all-embracing history of public culture.

Video collection |
| |
The Institute for German Literature and Media collected about 18.500 video clips since the 1980ies. The selection of the videotapes is based on the main focus of research and doctrine: the transition from silent picture to talkie, television play in the east-west comparison, television series, documentaries and the cinema. Besides a wide range of material regarding cinematic movies, the archive incorporates a collection of 20 years of German television. It thus builds the foundation for the filmaesthetic and historical research in Marburg. With the newly established chair for the New Media the archive is going to be extended towards interactive media, film and computer, virtual realms.

Course of studies |
| |
The aim of studying media sciences is to impart analytical and theoretical competences in the area of audiovisual media. Media Studies are meant to prepare students for work in the fields connected to those media: within the editorial department of a telestation, in public relations, as a film or television critic, in education as a media-pedagogue or in scientific research.
Although Media Studies in Marburg incorporate practical training units they focus on the historical and theoretical topics of the subject. An immediate, practical training as offered by film or television academies does not take place. The same applies to the journalistic professions: Media Studies provide an analytical competence in the media field but a systematic education for professional journalism is not offered.
In consequence of the multi-media based structure the subject of Media Studies is interdisciplinary by definition. The conditions of study therefore allow for the possibility to swap courses in the department of German Literature and Media with courses from other departments. Additionally courses from other departments are listed in the commented university calendar of the department of German Literature and Media. |
