"Established in 1928, the LWL-Medienzentrum für Westfalen (LWL-Multimedia Centre of Westphalia, 'LWL' being an abbreviation for the regional Westphalian association 'Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe') works as a governmental non-profit-institution for the area of Westphalia. It is today a regional hub in the nationwide German network of multimedia resource centres. The work of the Centre is guided by three aims that form its profile:
- Using multimedia as an aid to learning in school and in general education programmes
(Multimedia Education Section)
- Multimedia-aided communication of subjects covering the history of Westphalia, past and present
(Multimedia Production and Technical Section)
- The preservation of the audiovisual cultural heritage of the region
(Audiovisual Archive Section)

Tasks of the Audiovisual Archive |
 |
The Audiovisual Archive has existed since 1986 as an autonomous section within the LWL-Medienzentrum für Westfalen. In the broader terms of the custody of the regional cultural heritage undertaken by the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe, its task is to collect, document and make available to the public in appropriate form all audiovisual materials (pictures, films, sound) referring to or originating in the region of Westphalia.
The section is divided into four subsections:
- The picture archive
- The film archive
- The sound archive
- The school media archive

The picture archive
The picture archive of the LWL-Medienzentrum für Westfalen is a unique source of information on the history of the region of Westphalia and its people. At present it comprises about 300,000 pictures of Westphalia's history and culture from 1850 to the present, as well as 3,000 aerial photos taken in the period after 1970. Major themes are landscapes, cities and villages, agriculture, manual trades and industry, art, architecture, customs, as well as people and their everyday life in changing times.
The picture archive acquires public and private collections of pictures, and it expands every year by the addition of contemporary aerial photos and archive-produced documentary photo collations.
The collections are indexed by subject, digitised and documented via EDP. At present, some 33,000 computerized pictures are available for scholarly, private or commercial use. We research without charge, transmit picture-motif offers via post or e-mail and on request make analogue and digital picture reproductions for any and every purpose. Since 2004 the picture archive is accessible on the Internet.
The picture archive offers to district and municipal archives comprehensive advice on EDP-aided picture reproduction and archiving.

The film archive
The film archive in the LWL-Medienzentrum für Westfalen was added to the picture archive in 1995; its task is to collect, index by subject and make publicly available to interested persons Westphalia's cinematic heritage dating from the beginning of the 20th century to the present.
The film archive presently looks after some 1,500 films and film segments comprehensively covering the history of Westphalia, past and present. Its resources are continuously augmented by loans, deposited stores and purchases of collections. A special focal point in developing and extending the archive is the greatly endangered genre of amateur films, which are here collected and indexed by subject. In coordination with the owners, the archive sees to it that professional backup copies are made on VHS or DVD and also endeavours to obtain subsidiary rights for possible production purposes. In the series "Westfalen in historischen Filmen" (Westphalia in Historical Films), at present comprising about 25 titles, there appear annually three to four productions or editions of historical films, thus making important film documents of local and regional history available for work in these areas. (See www.westfalen-medien.de)
In addition to providing professional advice regarding the protection of existing public and private film resources in Westphalia-Lippe, the WLM film archive has since 1991 been part of a state-wide film-archiving team, the "AG Filmarchivierung in Nordrhein-Westfalen". Advised by this team and financially supported by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the LWL-Medienzentrum für Westfalen is presently generating an electronic data base, which enables a decentralised archiving and indexing of the cinematic heritage of Westphalia and before long of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The sound archive
In a third level of extension the sound archive was added in autumn 2000. The aim of the sound archive is to collect and index sound recordings originating in Westphalia. At present the collection comprises about 400 recordings on various bases ranging from magnetic tape reels to audio CDs.
In addition to protecting and expanding its resources, the sound archive has set for itself the task of presenting historical sound documents in contemporary form. The CD series entitled "Tonzeugnisse zur Westfälischen Literatur" (Sound Documents on Westphalian Literature) was established in cooperation with the Literature Commission for Westphalia. The school media archive
The school media archive is the forth element in terms of collections. Here one can find AV-media, which once were produced for the education in school and extra curricular education, and have meanwhile been replaced by modern media. Nevertheless, and perhaps precisely because of that, these media are of high historical and cineastic value. The school media archive contains especially 16mm-films and slide series with reference to the state North Rhine-Westphalia. A review in the LWL-Medienzentrum für Westfalen is possible at any time. Everybody has the opportunity to research the complete catalogue online.
