On October 15th, 1990, the first academy in the Federal Republic of Germany devoted to all areas of audiovisual media began its teaching programme. It has been offering its basic 8 semester undergraduate programme in addition to the 4 semester further education and postgraduate programme since the winter semester of 1994/95. The Audiovisual Media Programme is composed of a wide variety of specialized subjects supporting major study areas, which students may individually opt for and combine. There are four key areas of teaching and research at the academy: Film and Television, Media Design, Media Art and Art and Media Studies. During the course, high priority is given to experimental work accompanied by the acquisition of technical competence in the media. For this reason, the curriculum centres primarily around studio and lab work in conjunction with specialized seminars aimed at translating practical skills into a media-related and artistic form. A series of basic seminars and lectures will provide an integrated study of the historical and theoretical foundations of audiovisual media.

All work projects carried out by students and fellows at the Academy of Media Arts are archived and documented in the project archive. Archive staff aim to make the projects readily available on site for in-house and outside users. The Archive assists press and public relations work and arranges the loan of projects for festivals, academic presentations and exhibitions. Students are required to submit a reference copy of diplomas and preliminary diplomas.
The project archive ensures that the recordings and recording bases (films, videos, photos, slides, CD-ROMs, etc.) are stored under conditions suitable for the given material, and it archives all written, sound and pictorial documentation of the projects (theses and dissertations, scripts, exhibition catalogues, video and photographic documentation of installations, etc.). The information on the projects and their authors is collected in a database and a selection is made available to the public via the Academy's homepage (www.khm.de/projects/index_d.htm).

The estate of Vilém Flusser (1920–1991) has been located since October 1998 in the Academy of Media Arts, Cologne. It was the endowment of Frau Edith Flusser, who made generous provision for administration and upkeep. The archive includes some 2,500 manuscripts – essays, lectures, books – of Flusser's as well as his extensive correspondence and publications. Most of these works are in German – some in Portuguese, English and French – and are indexed under approximately 180 keywords for research purposes. This polyglot and heterogeneous collection is supplemented by Flusser's library of travel literature, numerous sound and pictorial documents with interviews, conversations and lectures, a growing accumulation of secondary literature and an increasing number of graduate and doctoral dissertations.
In future the collection is to be accessible via the Internet; it is publicly available for ready reference right now at the Academy of Media Arts, Cologne, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 noon to 7 p.m. |
