Goethe-Institut is the largest institutional medium of German foreign cultural policy. It is the worldwide organization devoted to communicating German language and culture.
A total of 126 cultural institutes in 77 countries working on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany organize cultural programmes, offer language instruction, assist teachers, universities and authorities in promoting the German language and offer up-to-date information on Germany.

Goethe-Institut is becoming increasingly active in the sector of library and information work focused on the know-how-transfer of German and foreign concepts and planning, methods and applications of information and knowledge management relating to library organization, education and advanced education. The major tasks and fields are: inter-library cooperation, promotion of literature, reading and translation, and expert information/advice.
Goethe-Institut maintains in 77 countries special libraries devoted to Germany and German subjects. Multimedia resources worldwide total some 1 million items, of which about 200,000 are audiovisual.
The resources on offer focus on German-related themes of the 20th century:
- Library and information sector
- Philosophy, psychology
- Social sciences
- History, history of civilization/culture
- German literature
- Art, architecture
- Music, theatre, cinema
- Regional and cultural studies (Landeskunde)
- German as a foreign language

Goethe-Institut also offers online databases and information services on the Internet.

The Goethe-Institut Web site is accessed some seven million times a month (total as of August 2003).

Media resources |

Goethe-Institut produces and distributes numerous media resources serving to inform foreign communicators/educators about cultural, social and political life in Germany. The media appear in German and in numerous foreign languages.
Selection:
- Supplementary educational media for regional studies
Various instructional media on regional studies and literature for children, youth and adults. The programme includes various Internet presentations, CD-ROMs, video
and audio cassettes, books, folios, maps and games. A special feature is regional and cultural material that is now provided for 17 countries and that is available in German and English.

- Films
More than 600 films from the present and the past are available worldwide to cultural and educational institutions. The films can be borrowed in VHS or DVD formats in exchange for a small fee towards packaging and shipping.

- Video magazine "KuBus"
Cultural and social life in Germany is presented in the video magazine "KuBus". Communicators/educators and institutions around the world can order the videos as information for their cultural and educational work.
